Drum making

Djembemoves offers everyone interested in playing the djembe the chance to assemble their own drum. There is a certain satisfaction with being actively involved in the making of your own instrument, and it will add to your enjoyment of playing. These workshops are designed to give you the chance to really assemble your own drum, starting with only the wood and the metal rings. From there we will attach the rope and the skin, and we’ll finish the assembly of the drum to the point where you can start playing. Sean will guide you at every step of the way to ensure a satisfactory result, but the participant will be actually doing as much of the work as possible.

The workshop takes place over a period of 2 days, which are at least 3 days apart for adults and 3 days, in which the last two days are at least 3 days apart for youth. We will work from about 10am to 4pm on each day. There is a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 participants per workshop. Please contact us to discuss your choice of materials, which we will provide. You can register your interest so we can get a group together for such a workshop. Dates and location can then be discussed with everyone. Note that the assembly of a djembe places some strain on your body, and therefore you need to be fit and physically able to participate.

Groups of greater than 8 people can read the example in the tab on the right, for an indication of the cost and processes involved. We can discuss your specific requirements and agree a fixed cost based on that.

Djembemoves will bring a range of materials on the day of the workshop, from which you will be able to choose. This includes the wooden shells, the rope and the skin. We can discuss your requirements prior to the workshop to ensure there is a suitable choice for you on the day.

We will also provide all the tools necessary for completing the assembly of your drum, and every participant will have their own set to use for the duration of the workshop.

Please read the information in the tab on the right for an example of a workshop. The example gives detailed information on the processes involved in the assembly of a djembe.
