The djembe has become internationally the most known and played West African drum, and is being used more and more as a general purpose percussive instrument in many musical genres. This style of djembe music is very far removed from the traditional village ideas of conducting festivities. Many djembe groups world wide also perform without dancers, focussing only on the music itself, with its poly-rhythmic structures and melodies. We at djembemoves believe that the integration of different styles in our music and the exchange of musical cultures should be supported and promoted, and we think that the djembe has a role to play in many musical forms which will bring joy and appreciation to many people.

However, we also would like people to consider that the djembe has a long and important tradition up to the present day in many parts of West Africa. The interest shown in the music itself is often not accompanied by an appreciation of its importance to many people. Djembemoves therefore is also dedicated to bringing some of this culture to those who are interested, with the utmost respect to those groups who still incorporate the djembe as an essential part of both everyday life and in significant societal occasions.
